Upholstery Classes

My upholstery classes are held once a month on a Saturday from 10am-4pm and every Monday night (6.30pm-9.30pm) Wednesday morning (9.30am-12.30pm), Thursday morning (9.30am-12.30pm) and Friday morning (9.30am-12.30pm).

What to expect on my courses

Classes are small and consist of three people for the longer courses and a maximum of four people for shorter courses. In the one day class I can teach you the basics of reupholstering a small item such as a footstool or an ottoman or dining chair. You will learn to strip the chair and rebuild it using modern upholstery techniques. I provide all the fillings, expertise and lunch and you provide the furniture and fabric. In my six week courses, you can upholster something a little larger such as a nursery chair or a large footstool (or larger items, up to the size of a wing chair, if you wish to undertake a few 6 week courses).

What sort of item should I bring for the one day course?

Most students who bring along a small footstool or dining chair complete their project within the day. You might have to finish adding braiding or decorative studs at home though.

What sort of chair should I bring for the six week course?

Your best bet, if you want to complete your chair within the six weeks, is to start with something small like a nursery chair. I usually recommend a small 1950’s nursery chair with no arms. 95% of students who have brought this type of chair to class finish within six weeks. Here are a list of other chairs and the average finishing time of students using modern upholstery (unless otherwise stated):

Nursery chair (no arms): 6 weeks
Large Footstool: 6 weeks
Traditionally upholstered Dining Chair: 6 weeks
Nursery Chair with arms: 8-12 weeks
Wing Chair with cushion: 12-14 weeks

What other factors would allow me to finish my chair in six weeks?

People work at different speeds within the six weeks and there are other variables that might help you finish your chair within six weeks.

Some people have chosen to take their chair home during the course to do homework. This has allowed them to complete, or almost complete their chair within the six weeks.

If the chair has good foundations, such as a sturdy foam base, then you could do a recover of the chair, rather than a full strip and recover if you choose to do so, however, you will miss some of the skill used in completing an upholstered chair back from a frame.

What if I don’t finish my chair?

Students are offered a 15% discount on any further courses booked to complete their chair (new chairs are charge at the full rate).

What are the additional costs likely to be on the six week course?

Materials used are invoiced once the chair is complete, or when you have finished the course.

These are the average costs based on type of chair:

Traditionally upholstered Dining Chair: Around £10
Wing Chair from frame: around £40
Nursery Chair from frame: around £20

Do I have to take my chair home each week?

No, your chair can be stored in my studio for the course duration.
